TechNote#2 – this post is the standard post for an eight foot tall wood privacy fence. As general rule, here in north central Texas, they are set on six foot centers.

Where \ When \ How — Our shop is in a small 60’s vintage industrial park in North Dallas about 1/2 mile due southwest of LBJ (I-635) & I-35. The nearest large intersection is Royal Lane & I-35E. Our address is 2261 Crown Road, Building#107, Dallas, Texas, 75229. The entrance to the parking lot is from the north side of Crown Rd. about halfway between Newberry and Goodnight. Our building is the very last one on the right (at the north end of the parking lot). We’re open six days a week, Monday thru Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If the front glass door is locked … which it usually is when Lupé’s there by himself … just go around to the big roll up doors on the south side of the building. Anyone in there can either help you or point you towards someone who can.

One more thing … all these warehouses and parking lots look the same; … so, when you get where you think we’re supposed to be and you still can’t find us, call or text, and we’ll send out a search party.

(A trick to finding us: …… once you’re going west on Crown … and you get to where the pavement changes from concrete to hot top (asphalt), start counting telephone poles after the huge tree on the right. (You’ll know it when you see it) Turn right in between poles number three and number four. Go (north) all the way to the back … we’re the last building on the right.)

Note: … bring ratchet straps to tie down your load … none of the following, nor any combination thereof, will do the job: rope, bungees, string, bathrobe ties, bubble gum, bailing wire, duck tape, crossed fingers, and/or prayer)

Also we have the hardware for steel posts – see photos …

TechNote: This is the way that fence contractors figure how many posts to load on their truck for a job …

1) First, … they do the ‘’cow pasture’’ calculation … that is, they figure the number of posts that they would need to build an absolutely straight line of fence out in the middle of a treeless flat level cow pasture. To do that, they divide the total footage length of the fence by the distance they’re going to set their posts apart. If their answer has a remainder, they round up the next whole number … and then add one post to start with.

Example 1: 120 lineal feet of 8’ fence … 120 feet divided by 6’ feet between posts equals 20 and no remainder. So … 20 it is … and then add one to start with, … makes it 21. Twenty-one posts to build a 120’ straight line of fence out in the middle of a cow pasture.

Example 2: 124 lineal feet of 8’ fence … 124 feet divided by 6’ feet between posts equals 20 and a remainder of 4. So … because there’s a remainder, we round up to 21 … and then add one post to start with … makes it 22. Twenty-two posts to build a 124’ straight line of fence out in the middle of a cow pasture.

If there’s a hard part to this, that’s it.

2) Second, they throw on a post for every corner they have to turn.

3) Third, they throw on 2 posts for each walk gate and 4 posts for each double driveway gate.

And that’s it. That’s how many posts they would load on their truck. They might not have to use all of them, but odds are they won’t get out to the job and come up 1 or 2 short.
