built on 3 – 2 x 3 x 8 roughhewn Pine rails
with 5 – round head 6d ring shank galvanized 1-3/4 inch x 13 ga (099 inch diameter) nails per picket (6 nails in the end pickets)
The pickets are new utility grade Spruce 1 x 4′s
(actual dimensions = 3/4 – 5/8 inch thick x 3-1/2 inch wide x 6 ft tall – dog ear)
There are 27 to 27-1/2 pickets per panel

Utility grade does not equal “pretty”. Utility grade is for emergency fences on a strict budget. If you needed to replace 40 feet of fence YESTERDAY and you have $100 to do it and you don’t care what it looks like as long as it’s standing? This is your panel.

Utility grade panels allow for holes, splits, wane, and cracks. Some are really ugly, some are not so ugly. The pictures shown below demonstrate the best and worst of what you could get from these utility grade panels. The majority of what we built fall somewhere in the middle.
